I like many others will forever have the memory burned in my mind of where I was the moment the 9/11 attacks took place. I decided to join others in sharing what was going on with me and my family...
That morning I was sound asleep because I still had a few days before starting a new job so, I was taking advantage of being able to sleep in. My mom came rushing into my room and told me to turn on the Today Show. In my sleep state of mind I was thinking who in the world would be on this morning that was important enough that my mom comes in so frantically. I turned on the TV and got my eyes adjusted just in time to see the second plane hit. I was sitting there stunned...I didn't know what to think and I wasn't even sure if I could move. The next thing I know is that I am dressed and driving down the street to my grandmother's house (who lives 5 houses away).
I remember the heart wrenching feeling as I watched people jumping out of the Twin Towers...seeing the plane crash into the Pentagon & the crash in Pennsylvania. I so bad wanted to look away...to turn the TV off as if none of this was happening in the SAFE COUNTRY that I call home, but I couldn't take my eyes off the television as all of this was unfolding & then finally as the towers fell.
I remember the nervousness that my family felt through out the day. My cousin Joy & her husband moved to New York City just a couple of weeks before...we had no clue where they lived in comparison to the Twin Towers. My aunt finally called us to let us know that she got a call from Joy just long enough to tell her they were OK and several miles from the Trade Center. Apparently Joy and Christopher walked up and down the streets stopping at every payphone until they found one that was not dead...they didn't get to talk long before the phone went dead.
I remember the tears and relief that was in Mammaw's eyes after we got the news that Joy and Christopher were OK.
Everyday from now on I will remember all of this...but on every 9/11 I will spend extra time praying for the family and friends of the victims.
Please take a few moments out of your hectic day and do the same!!!
